If creativity techniques have been around for decades, it's a fair question
to ask why they aren't used more often. The education system is partly to
blame. There's very little systematic creativity taught in the UK or the US (unlike
Australia, where creativity is on the curriculum). Even if you are aware of
them, the range of techniques can be confusing. I can't untangle the techniques mess here, but that's why co-author Paul Birch and I wrote Imagination Engineering (Pitman Publishing), published in the UK and US at the end of May. In Imagination Engineering we've assembled a toolkit for business creativity, pulling a range of techniques into an easy-to-remember four part structure. By including a healthy supply of fun marginalia, and using short pieces of fiction that help reinforce the message, we hope to put the enjoyment back into practical business creativity. |
